Martinsburg College offers ACLS, BLS and PALS certification and recertification courses.  These courses are approved to provide CME/CE/CEU credits in joint providership with the Postgraduate Institute for Medicine (PIM).

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of healthcare providers involved in the care of patients in cardiac arrest.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

ACLS Certification/Re-certification:
  • List the components of the BLS Primary Survey and ACLS Secondary Survey for adult patients
  • Discuss ethical considerations for commencing or suspending resuscitation
  • Explain the importance of providing prompt, high-quality BLS, prioritizing early chest compressions and integrating early automated external defibrillator (AED) use
  • Recognizing the medications that are utilized in resuscitation
  • Recognize the major signs and symptoms of a stroke and discuss why timely action is crucial
  • Describe how team dynamics impact the overall team’s performance
  • Explain how to operate various pieces of equipment
  • Implement the appropriate ACLS algorithms
PALS Certification/Re-certification:
  • Describe what is required to perform high-quality child and infant CPR and when to integrate early AED use
  • Recognize patients who do and do not require immediate intervention and perform early management
  • Describe the required interventions to prevent respiratory and cardiac arrest in pediatric patients
  • Describe the importance of effective team dynamics, including the individual roles and responsibilities during a pediatric resuscitation
  • Apply the BLS, Primary and Secondary Assessment
  • Describe the necessary techniques and equipment needed to support and assist with respiratory and cardiac instability
  • Identify indicators of various types of shock and perform early interventions for shock treatment
  • Identify cardiac arrhythmias and determine proper course of treatment, including medications, shock therapy and BCLS procedures
  • Identify steps to properly manage patients post-arrest
BLS Certification/Re-certification:
  • Provide high-quality CPR for persons of all ages
  • Recognize the signs of someone needing BLS intervention
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the AHA Chain of Survival, specifically the BLS components
  • Demonstrate proper use of an AED
  • Describe your role as an effective team member in multi-rescue CPR
  • List proper procedures for relieving a foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults. children, and infants
